Fall has officially started, although it might not seem like it when we’re still experiencing hot days. The cool weather is still not far off, and this can make it easy to assume that air conditioning repair in Conway, AR is no longer a priority. The air conditioning system is going to run less and less until it goes on a short winter hiatus.

This makes it tempting to ignore seemingly “minor” troubles with an air conditioning system in the early fall. Odd noises, uneven cooling, temperatures that don’t feel as comfortable … you might try to dismiss all these as something to deal with later, such as in the spring when it’s time for AC maintenance.

Please don’t put off air conditioning repair like this! The time to call for repairs for an air conditioner is as soon as you notice the troubles. Here’s why we never recommend delaying any professional repairs for your AC.

Why Might I Need a Whole-House Humidifier?

September 12th, 2022

High humidity is a problem that most people don’t need explained to them. Even if they don’t know why high humidity on a hot day makes the hot day feel much worse, they know exactly what the sensation is like. With too much moisture in the air (relative humidity higher than 60%), the human body cannot release heat as effectively and the trapped heat causes temperatures to feel hotter than they are.

But what about low humidity? You’ve heard the phrase “a dry heat” as a positive, but dryness itself is not positive and is as much trouble as high humidity. Dry conditions often occur during the winter, and your house might benefit from a whole-house humidifier to provide the balance necessary for comfort and health.

Watch for Warnings Your AC’s Compressor Is in Jeopardy

August 1st, 2022

All the components of your home’s central air conditioning system have important jobs. But one component has a special elevated status: the compressor. This is the engine of the entire AC, since it’s where energy is applied to the refrigerant to put it under pressure and then start the process of circulating through the system and moving heat from inside the home to outside.

The compressor uses the most electrical power of any part of the air conditioner (from 2,900 to 4,100 watts per hour) and it’s also expensive to replace if it burns out. The cost to replace a failed compressor is often costly enough that if the part is no longer under warranty it is more cost-effective to replace the entire air conditioning system.

When you’re looking to replace your current central air conditioning system, you have several options. The basic choice is to put in a new central air conditioner—probably one with better energy efficiency than your current one. (Even if you purchase a mid-efficiency AC, the technology and standards for efficiency have risen since the last time you bought an air conditioner.) But you can also decide to have a heat pump installed.

The big advantage of having a heat pump is that it works similar to an air conditioner but can also switch into a heating mode and provide warmth to a house during winter. You can replace both your AC and heater with a heat pump.

That’s the usual limit on thermostats, and people rarely want the house any colder than that. They rarely want it colder than 68°F! But could the air conditioning system conceivably cool the house even lower? Or, to put it another way, just what is the cooling limit for your AC?

Answering these questions isn’t only an exercise in hypotheticals. You can learn important facts about how your AC runs and how best to manage thermostat settings when you know an air conditioner’s limits.

Too Much Refrigerant in an AC Is as Bad as Too Little

June 20th, 2022

In a previous post, we addressed the problems that occur when an air conditioner leaks refrigerant. The refrigerant in an AC is supposed to stay at the same level for the entire lifespan of the system. This set amount is known as the air conditioner’s charge, and if it drops below the factory-set level, it will cause numerous problems culminating in the compressor burning out.

However, the opposite situation is also a problem. The charge of an AC must be precise. If an air conditioner has more refrigerant in it than it’s supposed to, it’s known as overcharged—and it will also lead to a dead AC unless repair technicians bleed out the excess refrigerant and restore the correct charge.
