As we move into March, we’ll get into a time of year when the weather hovers between too cold and too warm, which for many people is the best time of the year. (Well, if you have pollen allergies it might not be.) This is the best weather for making changes to your home’s HVAC system because you won’t have to rely as much on either the air conditioner or the heater.
Soon you’ll schedule your AC maintenance to prepare for the summer heat, but for right now we have a good suggestion for a useful service—call us to schedule duct testing in Little Rock, AR.
Why would I need my ducts tested?
Because the ductwork in your house wears down over time, and it’s not easy for you to notice it until the damage starts to have a larger negative effect on the performance of your HVAC system and the quality of air in your house.
In general, we recommend homeowners have their ducts tested every five years, or when they first move into a previously owned house. If you’ve never had it done for your house, then right now is a great time to have the job done.
What will duct testing tell me?
Our duct testing methods determine the integrity of your ductwork, i.e. how well it maintains air pressure. Ductwork is designed to be airtight along its full length so it won’t lose air pressure from the air it circulates through the house. Gaps, leaks, and breaches in the ducts, even the smallest ones, will cause the air pressure to drop and lower the energy efficiency of the HVAC system. The ductwork will also lose air that’s already been heated/cooled, which is money going to waste. With duct testing, we’ll be able to tell if your ducts need sealing or possibly replacement of sections.
How is duct testing done?
For us to test ductwork, we first have to seal off the entire HVAC system by closing off all of the room vents. Once this is done, we attach a powerful vacuum onto the main duct where it leaves the HVAC cabinet. This vacuum raises the pressure inside the ductwork to high levels, and we use a manometer (a pressure-reader) to see how well the ducts retain this pressure. The faster the pressure drops, the worse condition the ducts are in. We’ll know if you have leaks or other problems that need to be fixed.
Can you fix my ducts if they’re leaking?
Absolutely! We offer duct sealing and duct replacement services. Proper duct sealing using special mastic resins and metal tapes can make your ducts airtight once more. You’ll have your HVAC system back to its original shape.
